Perseus with the Head of Medusa Engraving, 1904, Wielick D-87, edition unknown. 12 1/2 x 9 1/4 in. Signed in pencil, lower right. This is a superb impression printed on Japanese paper. The margins are full and the condition is excellent. Aarts was born in the Hague and moved to Amsterdam in 1911 were he became an influencial teacher at the Rijksacademie. (He replaced Pieter Dupont who died prematurely in 1911.) This exceptional engraving is a tribute to Northern mannerist prints, particularly the work of Hendrik Goltzius. From the collection of F. Teding van Berkhout (not in Lugt). SOLD |
