Blauwbrugje (Little Blue Bridge)
Etching and aquatint, probably about 1924-25, very small edition. 11 x 9 7/8 in. Signed in pencil lower right and also inscribed "eigendruk" in the lower left. This is a fine impression of this very rare print. The margins are full and the condition is very good. (There's some subtle skinning and adhesive residue on the front margins from a previous face mat.) Altink was born, raised and studied in Groningen and this is a view of the countryside where he lived. He was a founding member of the Dutch expressionist group called "de Ploeg" which means both "plow" and "team". He was also a gifted painter and this subject appears in more than one of his oils. The Groninger Museum houses a solid collection of his work and of other de Ploeg artists such as Wiegers, Dijkstra, Alkema, Faber, etc. Since 1993, the Museum has published a series of books on de Ploeg artists and the volume devoted to Altink, "Jan Altink - Iconen Van Het Groningerland," was recently published.

Jan Wiegers with Model
Etching, 1923, edition unknown. 12 1/8 x 9 5/8 in. Signed with the artist's estate stamp. This is a fine, lifetime impression printed on white laid paper. The margins are full and the condition is very good other than a crease in the right margin. This work is illustrated (#69) in Jan Altink, Groninger Land en Menschen (1969) published by the Gemeentemuseum in the Hague. Altink was one of the founders, along with Jan Wiegers and others, of the Dutch expressionist movement known as "de Ploeg." Altink was born in Groningen and that's were this important movement started in 1918. He was also a painter of great merit and produced many other prints.

Landscape with Farmhouses
Woodcut, 1926, edition unknown. 9 3/8 x 14 3/4 in. Signed and dated in ink, lower right. Here we have a fine, rich impression printed on a sturdy cream wove paper. The margins are full and the condition is good. (There's a repaired break just outside the image in the upper left corner. There are traces of old cellotape adhesive in the margins, one of which extends on the bottom to just outside the image.) This potent and very rare woodcut exemplfies Altink at his best in this medium. He also worked in etching and lithography and excelled as a painter. He was born in Groningen and studied at the Minerva Academy. He one of the founders of "de Ploeg" and remained a member of the group into the 1960s.

Etching with drypoint, 1931, from a very small edition. 7 7/8 x 10 1/8 in. Signed and dated in pencil. This is a fine impression with probably the full margins. The condition is fine. (The two edges of the platemark, verso, are professionally reinforced due to the intense pressure of the plate from printing.) Altink was born, raised and studied in Groningen and this is a view of the countryside where he lived. He was a founding member of the Dutch expressionist group called "de Ploeg" which means both "plow" and "team". The subject of this print is very appropriate given the meaning of "de Ploeg." In fact, most of Altink's etchings show a deeply bitten plate and his lithographs are consistently dark and dramatic. Provenance: C.J.M. Rolink.

We've located two paintings that relate to this scene. We also had an impression printed in blue ink titled, Blauwbrugje, (Little Blue Bridge.) This print is a splendid example of Dutch expressionism.
