Woman Seated Facing Right, Milking a Cow (Vrow Zittend naar Rechts, een koe Melkend) Woodcut, 1914, Rijksmuseum catalogue / de Groot P19; edition unknown. 7 3/4 x 5 5/8 in. Initialed in the block and signed in pencil, lower right. This is a fine impression printed on thin off-white Japanese paper. The margins appear to be full with a deckle edge on two sides. Excellent condition. This endearing work is exemplary of his command of the woodcut medium. He was essentially self-taught and his choice of subjects were animals, birds and simple domestic scenes inspired by the Frisian town where he lived. Mankes also did a few etchings and overall, his prints are rather uncommon. He's a unique figure in Dutch art history and his life was very short due to tuberculosis. He died at the age of thirty-one.
