Drypoint, aquatint and and roulette work, 1908, edition unknown. 9 3/4 x 13 3/4 in. Signed in pencil. This is a fine impression of a rare and remarkable print. The condition is very good. Mielatz is best know for city views but here he created a memorable, atypical work combining refined technical achievement with subtle color variations. The work was printed by the artist and there's a pencil reference that this is a trial proof for an unknown edition.

Moonlight, Hudson River - MIELATZ

Moonlight, Hudson River
Aquatint, 1905-10, edition unknown. 11 3/4 x 14 3/4 in. Signed in pencil and inscribed "imp." indicating this impression was printed by the artist. This is a superb impression of this large and very rare New York print. The margins are full and the condition is excellent; the printed surface is very well preserved. (There's a pencil notation on the bottom margin indicating this is a trial proof.) This stunning and subtle work is an American tonalist print, par excellence. Certainly, we think of Whistler and his influence but also the paintings of Inness and Twachtman, among others. Charles Mielatz was a master of aquatint and this print is exceptional. Here he was able to take a conventional graphic medium and create a distinctive, painterly color print which transcends so much of the prosaic and predictable landscape etching of the era. Another impression of "Moonlight, Hudson River" is found in the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.

Newport Harbor from Beacon Rock - MIELATZ

Newport Harbor from Beacon Rock
Etching with remarque, circa 1885, edition unknown. 12 3/4 x 21 in. Signed in pencil. A fine impression of this rare print. Substantial margins. Very good condition other than minor stains in the right margin area and a faint soft crease in the left side of the image. This particular view was painted by William Trost Richards and others. Mielatz was living in Newport during the mid 1880s and worked along the New England shoreline.

The Flag - MIELATZ

The Flag
Color etching and aquatint with added pencil work on the legs of the soldiers, 1918, edition unknown; extremely rare. 13 1/4 x 4 3/8 in. Signed and dated in the plate and signed in pencil. This is a superb impression printed by the artist and inscribed "three aquatint and one line plate...trial roof." The condition is fine apart from a very faint suggestion of discoloration within a previous mat opening. Full margins. The scene depicted here is Armistice Day in New York, 1918. This is a remarkable, experimental American color print.
