Skulls and Old Books (Schedels met oude Boeken) Etching, 1919, Hallema 95, edition unknown. 11 3/4 x 18 7/8 in. Signed and dated in the plate, lower left. Signed in pencil and inscribed "eigen druk" (hand printed by the artist). This is a superb impression of this large work. The margins are full and the condition is fine. This exquisitely detailed etching, a "memento mori", is composed in the tradition of the 17th century Dutch still life painters. Pieck was one of the most famous illustrators of children's books in Holland at the time and there's a museum of his work in Hattem. SOLD |
