Builders at a Railway Viaduct, Amsterdam Etching and aquatint, undated, edition 20. 25 1/2 x 19 1/2 in. Signed and numbered in pencil. Signed in the plate. This is a fine, atmospheric impression of this large print. The margins are full. The condition is quite good apart from minor rippling in the image. Poortenaar did other etchings of this subject which shows builders working on deep foundation pilings ("heien" in Dutch). Poortenaar was a prolific etcher and produced many Dutch landscapes, London views as well as Indonesian subjects. He lived in London from 1914-1922 and embarked for Indonesia in 1922. He was closely associated with Willem Witsen, the prominent Dutch painter and etcher. $1,200 |

Waterloo Bridge (London) Etching and aquatint with added highlights by hand, 1919, edition unknown. 11 5/8 x 21 1/2 in. Signed and titled in pencil. This is a fine, luminous impression printed on cream laid paper with added color highlights in the distance between the two arches of the bridge. The margins are wide and the condition is good apart from slight discoloration here and there in the margins and some toning, verso. This exceptional work gained international exposure at the time it was published by Alfred Bell, New Bond Street, London, as it was also shown in the United States. Poortenaar was certainly inspired by Whistler and this work is a prime example. He lived in London from 1914-1922. SOLD |
