Dandelions -  RIST

Dandelions
Woodcut printed in colors, 1947, Williams 23, edition probably 150. 9 3/8 x 13 3/8 in. Signed in ink within the image, lower right. Titled in pencil. Here we have a stellar impression with full margins. The condition is fine. Mentored by Morris Blackburn, Rist has work in collections including the Brooklyn Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum, among others. He is known for his unique printmaking technique that combines traditional japanese woodcut methods with modern ingenuity. The Montclair Art Museum owns the eleven blocks for this print and the Lancaster Museum of Art (PA) owns a colored pencil drawing on tracing paper.

Woodcut printed in colors, 1944, Williams 16, edition 150. 9 1/4 x 11 3/4 in. Signed in ink within the image, lower right. Titled and numbered in pencil. This is a fine, luminous impression with full margins. The condition is excellent. Rist was probably introduced to the woodcut medium by Morris Blackburn when they visited a show of Japanese prints in New York. Yet Rist was essentially self-taught and designed, cut and printed his own blocks. This print is illustrated on page 171 of American Prize Prints of the Twentieth Century by Albert Reese.

Woodcut printed in colors, 1945, Williams 18, intended edition of 150. 13 7/8 x 9 3/4 in. Signed in ink within the image. Titled and numbered in pencil just below the image at lower left. This is a superb impression with modest margins but this is the full sheet as printed. The condition is excellent. "Fruit Dish" is one of Rist's very best prints. A discussion of his very complex printing technique is explained in the catalogue raisonné by the artist himself on pages 6-9.

Rhododendron
Woodcut printed in colors, 1942, Williams 10, edition 100 or 150. 13 1/8 x 10 in. Signed in ink within the image and titled in pencil just below the image. This is a superb, luminous impression of this uncommon print. The margins are modest in size but this is probably the full sheet as printed. Fine condition overall apart from a faint mat line showing in the margins. This is one of Rist's finest woodcuts.

Here we have a very fine impression printed on thin Japanese paper. The margins are modest but this is probably the full sheet as printed. This is a nice example of his work.
