Frühling (Spring) Etching, 1896, Rief 14 (ii/II, b of e); edition 50. 13 3/4 x 9 5/8 in. Signed in the plate, lower right. Initialed in the plate, lower left. Signed in pencil. This is a superb, richly inked impression of this major work from his Jugendstil (art nouveau) period. Born in Bremen, Vogeler was a central member of the artist colony in Worpswede which he joined in 1894. In 1895, he bought a cottage there surrounded by birch trees which is most likely the one depicted in this etching. He was also active as a book illustrator and binder. He did calendar and bookplate designs as well as wallpaper creations and houshold objects. There is a related painting in the Vogeler Museum in Worpswede. SOLD |
