Stow Wengenroth lithographs for sale

Stow Wengenroth was an outstanding American lithographer and he produced three hundred and sixty-nine lithographs between 1931 and 1977. He was a champion of black and white realism and his work was highly regarded by Andrew Wyeth. His command of the medium is considered remarkable to this day.

Wengenroth was born in Brooklyn in 1906. He studied at the Art Students League from 1923-27 and later at the Grand Central School of Art with Wayman Adams. He was elected to the National Academy of Design in 1938 and became a full Academician in 1941. His work is found in a great many museum collections.

This print was published as the frontispiece of a limited edition of the Lithographs of Stow Wengenroth, 1931-1972 as published by the Boston Public Library in 1974. This impression has large margins with a deckle edge on all sides and was not part of the book edition. Rare as such.

The condition is very good apart from soft wrinkling in the margins at the top and bottom. This is the Congregational Church which faces the village green in Wiscasset, Maine. The church was established in 1773.

The condition is fine apart from a small wrinkle along part of the bottom margin. The scene shows a view of Stage Fort Park in Gloucester, MA. This historic area was settled in the 1620s. Fitz Henry Lane did a painting in 1862 named Stage Fort across Gloucester Harbor which is now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
