Builders at a Railway Viaduct, Amsterdam - JAN POORTENAAR - etching and aquatint

JAN POORTENAAR
Dutch, (1886-1958)

Etching and aquatint, undated, edition 20. 25 1/2 x 19 1/2 in. Signed and numbered in pencil. Signed in the plate. This is a fine, atmospheric impression of this large print. The margins are full. The condition is quite good apart from minor rippling in the image. Poortenaar did other etchings of this subject which shows builders working on deep foundation pilings ("heien" in Dutch). Poortenaar was a prolific etcher and produced many Dutch landscapes, London views as well as Indonesian subjects. He lived in London from 1914-1922 and embarked for Indonesia in 1922. He was closely associated with Willem Witsen, the prominent Dutch painter and etcher.      $1,200
