WOJ NIEUWENKAMP
Dutch, (1874-1950)
Etching, 1917, Nieuwenkamp E 182, Branches/Heijbroek E182 (iii/III); edition 25. 17 3/4 x 21 3/4 in. Signed in pencil and inscribed, "épreuve d'artiste," and, "E182, 3de staat." This is a fine, luminous impression printed with plate tone on sturdy Japanese paper. The margins are full and the condition is fine. The scene here is located in central Java, Indonesia. Nieuwenkamp, based in Edam, developed a passion for traveling to far away places as well as other European countries. He went to Sumatra, Java and Bali (The Dutch East Indies), North Africa, Ceylon and India. He ended up buying a home near Florence in 1925. During his many years in Holland he traveled in an elaborate houseboat called De Zwerver where he kept his printing press and worked on site as he docked along various rivers and canals. His travels began in 1894 and ended in 1940 with the onset of WWII. He is often remembered as the first European artist to visit Bali, and did so more than once.
