Nieuwenkamp, based in Edam, developed a passion for traveling to far away places as well as other European countries. During his many years in Holland he traveled in an elaborate houseboat called De Zwerver where he kept his printing press and worked on site as he docked along various rivers and canals. His travels began in 1894 and ended in 1940 with the onset of WWII. He is often remembered as the first European artist to visit Bali, and did so more than once.
