Falling Leaves, Amersfoort (Vallende Bladeren) - WOJ NIEUWENKAMP
Medium: etching
WOJ NIEUWENKAMP
Dutch, (1874-1950)
Etching, 1907-1914, Nieuwenkamp E88, Braches E 88 (iii/IV); edition 10 in this state. 14 1/8 x 15 1/4 in. Signed in the plate, lower left. Signed and titled in pencil. (This impression has the etched remarque of leaves and a branch in the lower right corner.) This is a fine impression on sturdy laid paper. The margins are wide and the condition is very good. (There's a soft crease in the lower left corner in the blank area of the plate.) This exemplary work is a fine example of Dutch art nouveau ("nieuwe kunst") printmaking where art and decoration come together in a refined and elegant way. Braches lists a total of 33 impressions; the third state being printed in 1908. The artist finally printed the last ten impressions in 1916 with apparently no changes made to the plate. Braches does not indicate when the remarque was added. In any event, this is a rare and remarkable etching of the Dutch art nouveau era.
