Castle on a Mountain
Woodcut, circa 1900-1910, edition unknown. 15 5/8 x 19 5/8 in. Signed in pencil and inscribed "Epreuve No.IV." This is a fine impression on Japanese paper. The margins are substantial. Condition is good with soft creasing here and there and the margins are irregular and thin on the verso edges. The exact location of this monumental print is not known to us.

Drommedaris, Enkhuizen - VELDHEER

Drommedaris, Enkhuizen
Woodcut, circa 1900-1910, edition unknown but certainly fewer than 50. 14 1/2 x 17 1/8 in. Signed in pencil and inscribed "epreuve". A good impression with what appears to be a soft printing crease in the image. Full margins. Very good condition. A large, outstanding example of Veldheer's work in the woodcut medium.

Large Tree - VELDHEER

Large Tree
Woodcut, circa 1900-1910, edition unknown. 19 3/4 x 15 7/8 in. Signed in the block, lower right. Signed in pencil and also dedicated to fellow Dutch artist, Simon Moulijn in pencil. This is a fine impression printed on Japanese paper with full margins. The condition is quite good. Veldheer specialized in printmaking. He produced book designs, portraits, landscapes and some of his woodcuts were printed in colors. His work is illustrated and discussed in Holland on Paper in the Age of Art Nouveau (2014) by Cliff Ackley; see pages 208-209. He was influenced by Japanese printmaking and this topic is discussed in Japanese Invloed op Nederlandandse kunst, Imitatie et Inspiratie van 1650 tot heden (1991) published by the Rijksmuseum(Ch. van Rappard-Boon, et al.); pages 133-134.

Oude Hollandsche Steden aan de Zuiderzee - VELDHEER

Oude Hollandsche Steden aan de Zuiderzee
Woodcut, 1900, very small edition; proofs only. 9 5/8 x 6 7/8 in. Initialed in the block with the monogram and signed in pencil, lower right. This is a fine impression inscribed "proefdruk" in pencil. Wide margins. In very good condition overall; time staining and minor foxing. This wonderful Dutch art nouveau woodcut is the cover design for the book of the same title. It was published in Haarlem by Erven F. Bohn, 1900. Veldheer was a masterful woodblock artist who spent considerable time in France and was influenced by Japanese prints as well as Paris art dealer, Samuel Bing.

Portrait of Theo van Hoytema - VELDHEER

Portrait of Theo van Hoytema
Wood engraving (woodcut?), circa 1913, small edition. 6 3/8 x 6 3/8 in. Signed in pencil and also inscribed "proefdruk." This is a fine impression of an uncommon print. This is the full, untrimmed sheet with a deckle edge all around. The condition is fine other than minor paper imperfections, one in the blank area at left, and an old fold in the lower margin. This important portrait is illustrated on page 16 of Theo van Hoytema 1863-1917, the 1999 exhibition catalogue for the Drents Museum/Gemeentemuseum show about the artist. An impression of this work is located in the Rijksmuseum collection.

Swimming Fish - VELDHEER

Swimming Fish
Woodcut printed in colors, probably 1915, very small edition. 19 5/8 x 15 1/2 in. Unsigned. This is a fine impression of this extremely rare print. The paper is a fibrous Japanese mounted to an early support paperboard. The margins measure about 3/4 inches all around. Veldheer was profoundly influence by Japanese prints and he created a small group of fish woodcuts around 1915. The influence of Hiroshige (1797-1858) is clearly evident. Veldheer's color woodcuts are now very rare and were certainly printed in small editions. (See: Japanese Invloed op Nederlandse Kunst, Imitatie et Inspiratie, van 1650 tot Heden, Rijksmuseum,(1991), Ch. van Rappard-Boon, et al., pages 132-134.)
